Registered Trademark Mosaic
This mirror and red glass mosaic was created as a statement about our broken patent system which has come to hurt innovation by allowing patent trolls that hoard vague patents to sue and win with flimsy claims that hold back actual innovators.
Creation of the Registered Trademark Mosaic
I created this mosaic in 2010 as a result of seeing how patent trolls are destroying innovation in America. The registered trademark was originally the front of what was going to be a large sculptural work. It was a 2’ x 2’ padlock that was going to be covering in mirror and hung from barbed wire. It was also intended to be part of a larger collection of sculptural mosaics to be created out of mirror, red glass, and hardware. Soon after I started a couple sculptures for this series, I received commissions to create 12 Red Bull Disco Coolers and a few Vintage DecoBall Lamps. I love working with mirror, but it can be very tedious. I needed a break after a couple years of making mosaics with mirror, so I took a break. By the time I got back to them, the world had changed and there were bigger issues to make statements about.
