Red Girl Mosaic Collage
This mosaic was fabricated with cloth, raffia, and paper to create a work of great depth, expanding upon and trying to honor the beautiful photograph by Nadja Berberovic.
Creation of the Red Girl Mosaic Collage
As an artist that mostly works by commission, I create mosaics of every period and style, but tend to work in architectural installations that fall into a graphic design space. This was one of the first artworks I created that was a literal interpretation of a photograph. I wanted to make it as true to the beautiful photo that inspired me as possible while adding a personal touch. I had recently collected fabric for another project, and since the model was wearing an Asian shirt, it totally made sense to cut elements of the fabric for this artwork. I was also doing a craft with kids around this time and a family friend had dropped off raffia, so I was excited to get to use this to create a 3-D element. The flower stamens look like chenille stems, but were created out of a really unusual mesh type fabric I had that I cut into strips.
